Charlie's Ramblings (21) Songs I'm loving.. and.. your leaving?

I'm loving my new Crit partner.  She's awesome and a bloody good writer!  I've read one of her stories and it had me almost in tears.  That's what makes a good writer.  The emotions writing evokes shows that a writer can play with your feelings without you realising it.

Here are a few music videos of songs I'm loving right now.  I won't say why these songs mean something to me but you've got to admit they are awesome, right?!

... And lastly..

So you're leaving,
Well grab your shit, pack your bags and go,
I'll be right, here, I don't need you,
Be fine here on my own.

Don't think you can test me with your bluffing skills,
If that's what this is.
'Cos I won't take to that,
You won't get me biting.

'Cos I've been hurting a long time before this.
Been prepped, exactly for this.
So you're leaving,
Pack your bags and just go.

This little bit I wrote kind of comes out harsher than I intended.  It wasn't meant to be so blunt, and so um.. much.  I guess I put a little too much feeling in my writing than I intended. But at the same time, I can't be so happy go lucky in life if I didn't have somewhere to vent those bottled up feelings.
If you go, I'll miss you.. but I won't ever tell you how much.

That's all from me.
Enjoy

Charlie's Ramblings (20) Writing Software...

Rachel Caine uses Scrivener, other writers prefer just plain ol' word like Maggie Stiefvater.  It got me thinking.  How important is having Writing software?  And if you have software that has all the gadgets, wouldn't that be a little distracting when you are trying to write your story?

I realize I'm throwing out so many questions and I do have a reason for this.  I'm trying to work out whether I should get flashy software for my ipad for my writing.  At the moment I seem to be just using Word on my laptop and when I'm out anywhere the good ol' notebook comes out.  But since I've recently bought an iPad I was trying to get into the habit of using this for writing on the go... instead of googling and playing games lol.  Plus I don't want to get too distracted by all the features that some software includes.  Some features are good, but not too many.

So if anyone has any suggestions at all as to what is a good app or even good software for the computer please let me know.

Also on another note, I've finally sent some writing to my NEW critique partner Tammie.  Kinda freaking out about now though since I've never let someone else with writing experience check out my work.  I am also pretty keen to hear what she thinks though.

Fingers crossed I have a chance at captivating someone :)

Anyways that is all from me.  Hope you have a good night

This week I chose to do things a little differently.  If you haven't noticed, these have all got quotes or writing on them.  In no particular order here they are.. but they mean something to me either way.

Charlie's Ramblings (19) A Little Too Quiet.

One moment I'm going really well, the next things go a little too quiet!  If it isn't one drama it's another.  You gotta love life.

On an exciting note, I now own a red and black XL 250 motorbike.  I couldn't even tell you the brand since I  go by colour.  The rest of the info are just letters and numbers to me.  But yes, very exciting.  Still waiting for the bloody thing to be fixed but hey, beggars can't be choosers and I should be happy I now have a bike again.

We took Cruzito to the motorbike shop on Saturday and he got so excited about the motorbikes. See picture below.

And... this pic is of Cruzito's toe after he kicked it the second time.  The first time was really bad.  The nail went black and I was a little worried that he'd done more damage than it appeared.  Then last night he kicked it, and it went inky black.  When I went to show the boys his foot I realized the 'inky' colour was actually blood and he'd finally busted it.  Pretty gruesome huh?  Now I just need to keep an eye out to make sure he doesn't get an infection. (He also has Eczema..)

I'm also doing my best to get some writing done but the most I've been able to do are a type of free verse poems about someone that probably doesn't deserve my time.  Although, they are proving to be great inspiration, I still can't get them out of my head.  Driving me a little nuts.

That last image was a random but necessary one LOL.  I couldn't go past that one without putting it in.  Hope you enjoy looking at these very cool pics!

Charlie's Ramblings (18) Saturday at Brisbane Writer's Festival!

Hi all,
Sorry for the delay in details of Saturday, I'm STILL sick!  Yes, I brought my sickness to the Festival not once but twice.  And while (Yes I started that sentence with an And LOL I just realised) I frown upon sharing the love via sickness, to put it mildly, there was no way in HELL I was missing out on that second workshop!
I'm lucky I did.
I got to meet up with Brett (Demons Read Too) and Brittany (Nice Girls Read Books)again.  This time it was to do with Maggie Stiefvater's writers workshop Getting To the End in YA.  I also ran into Tammie who was in the Wednesday workshop with Belinda Jeffrey so it was awesome to go "Hey, I know that person in there" even though sadly I did forget her name to begin with.  Sorry Tammie.
I shall be brutally honest about the workshop though.  I was slightly disappointed with it, and I know she did say she was an unorganized person it just would have been nice if there were hand outs to go with the workshop.  I've got a shocking memory and when it comes to learning I've found that when I have stuff to take away with me on what we have sort of gone over, it tends to stick better in my mind! But anyways pretty cool to meet the famous author of the Mercy Falls Trilogy.
And on the plus side, I quite possibly/most certainly have a critique partner!! How awesome is that!  Makes me feel that little bit more writerish.  Yeah check that, I just made that word up lol AND I started this paragraph with an And.  Maybe I have a bit to go in the whole writing department Lol.

Since there was a glitch with the writers workshop and it finished at 12 not 2pm like it said on the website I was able to buy a ticket to go see Marianne de Pierres and Trent Jamieson with Brett and Brittany!  It was absolutely brilliant.  I hadn't come across any of Trent's books previously but as soon as I had heard some of his answers I thought, 'I wonder if his books have as much 'character' as he does'.  He definitely sold his writing without meaning to for me.  I was also absolutely lucky enough to meet Marianne de Pierres in person finally!  I went out and bought Burn Bright just to get a signature. I've already got a copy but that doesn't matter!! lol.  What made things even more awesome was she remembered talking to me as I had her on my First blogoversary at Spellbound By Books so yes, a little giddy at being remembered LOL.

After the signing I said farewell to Brittany and Brett and moved on to Don't Make Me Be Funny featuring Corinne Grant, Wendy Harmer, and forgive me for forgetting the last person, possibly Marieke?  Sorry!  By this point, my head was pounding, my ears were ringing and I had a killer sore throat. My headache had slowly been working its way to a migraine from towards the end of the workshop so I was doing my best to be pleasant while the monkey with the cymbals clanged away in my head.  Worst thing to do in this sort of circumstance is laugh but how could I not when I went to the last seminar/event with comedians/comediennes. (excuse the spelling, my headache is STILL here) I couldn't help myself, I bought Nagging for Beginners for a gift for my Mum for a laugh but instead found myself reading.

I found out something I didn't know I was. *GASP*  A nagger!  Yes, there is a section in the back where it has nags by age group and 0-5 years, that little rant fit me perfectly.  It goes along the lines of "Your toys go in your toy box Cruz. No not on the floor in the toybox.  Hey, I'm talking to you.  Don't ignore me, those ears aren't painted on sweetheart.  Pick up those toys or I will throw them in the bin." Okay you get the hint.  Well I think I may have been slightly horrified lol.  It IS built into the female gene LOL, because I flicked back through the pages and sure enough, there's more lines I've used.  I wish I could say sorry Michael A.K.A Other person I live with lol  for nagging you, but if you would just listen to me on occasion instead of me having to tell you ten times to get stuff done...  *deep breath* oh dear... there I go again. lol.

Well, I better stop here.  My head is telling me that it's had enough aches for one night and to start fresh in the morning.  Hope you enjoy and feel free to check out all the cool people listed above!!

Until Next Time

Random Writing: Strings and Memories

I wrote this with one person in mind.  You know who you are.  Sometimes I dream of  you.  On occasion I even see you, but deep down I know there is a wanting that I can't erase.  No matter how hard I try it comes back to you.  So in return I want you to feel the same.  Of not being able to get me out of your head, regardless of how hard you try.  Of wanting something you're not sure you can have.  That is all.

Hope you all can relate to this somehow.

This string is wrapped around my heart,
You have the other end.
Not sure how this whole story began,
but here we are again.

I thought I was losing you, the way you moved away from me.
And I felt the sharp tug of that string cut a little deeper
Right from the start I had a good idea how this would end,
when my heart tears in two, there isn't any other option really.

Sure, you'll get your string back but it's gonna hurt like hell.
Maybe it's what I deserve for playing your foolish game.
Because it's YOUR game,
Only you know the rules, so I'm bound to lose.

Silly me for thinking I had a chance of winning.
When guessing the rules aren't the same as knowing them.
And you keep changing those rules, even though the prize stays the same.
You.

But I guess I've long forgotten what I was playing for.
Sticking with that familiar cat and mouse game.
Loving the chase, and almost getting you.
Time and again.

I suppose,
In the end I'm playing for space... not just for you.
A memory of me in that space, one that you can't forget.
No matter how hard you try.
Because memories are sometimes better than what really happens.

Over time your mind erases the faults and all that is left is the dream of a memory.
That perfect moment the way you decide to remember it.
A fabrication of the truth.
It doesn't make it any less meaningful.

At the end of the day I'll settle for some space if that's all I can get.
And in return I'll give you some good memories you can hold onto, instead of me.

Charlie's Ramblings (17) Writers Workshop with Belinda Jeffrey

So, I've officially been to my first Writers Workshop EVER!  Surprising?  Yeah not really.  I tend to shy away from the whole writer workshops and outings usually because I worry that it would feel awkward or even worse, I find out that maybe I'm not a writer after all.  I mean, it does happen right?  So when the Brisbane Writer's Festival came around this year I bit the bullet (So to speak) and signed myself up for two writers workshops.

Today was workshop No 1: From Harry Potter to Tim Winton: How to Write for Young Adults.  My verdict?  I freaking loved it.  I hadn't read anything of Belinda's before but she was so lovely and down to earth.  It was a pretty packed room and everyone were so friendly and quite a few were willing to share the work they had written during the workshop.  I was among the few that didn't.  I did have my hand almost up until I heard some of their writing and HOLY CRAP these people were good on the spot, so I was quick to retract my hand LOL.

After a fantastic three hours I ducked down the the bookshop set up and grabbed myself both of Belinda's books to read.  I look forward to being able to sit down and read some of her work.  I also had a handful of titles to check out too.  There were a few names dropped so I couldn't help but write these down:  The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk-Kidd,  Broken Glass, One Foot Wrong, That Eye The Sky by Tim Winton and Riding the Red Cockatoo by John Danalis.  I'm even willing to pick up The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and give this another crack.  Um.. sometime in the future lol.

I also couldn't help picking up a copy of Good Reading a great magazine for book reviews and articles etc.

... and obviously I love my pamphlets and all sorts LOL.

... and lastly the awesome bag that my books came in.  This was seriously that good of quality that I was contemplating going back just to buy another book.. to get the bag LOL... okay yes I know.. but I liked it that  much.  Have I ever told you about my bag obsession???? lol

Okay so that is all from me for now..  I will leave you with a bit of my dreadful writing I did today.

If I could just grasp the words.  Really hold them in my hands and feel the weight of them, maybe then I could understand what he wanted.
His eyes pierce me in my place.  With every word he punches out, spittle flies along with it.  I don't dare look up, for fear that one of those words would hit my face.
He points to the door, leans back, his mouth set in a firm line.  I take the hint, grab my things and pay slip and go.  I don't know where I'm going, just that it's out of this room and away from the grotesque word spitting man, and into the unknown.
After three wrong turns I'm out in the sunshine.  More harsh sounding words fly around from passers-by.  Never directed at me, just in conversation with those they're walking with.  I pull my hoodie over my face and venture in the direction of the train station I can see.  I notice the words of those I pass slowly changing.  It's not until I'm at the station that they sound more like home.  Words I can understand and soak in.  My own language.
I've modified it a little so that it makes more sense and gets what I wanted to say down.
